A Computer Program for Analyzing Political Values
|
The sidebar on p. 560 raises the controversial issue of capital punishment, which presents special difficulties for public policy in the United States. Although the majority of the public supports the death penalty for capital crimes (as do a majority of your book's authors), there is something unsettling about America employing criminal punishment that has been outlawed virtually throughout the western democratic world. In fact, the European Community requires that countries cannot be members if they practice capital punishment. Support of the death penalty was one of the ten "order" questions featured in the IDEAlog program. You might refer to that program to see how most of the country felt on that issue, and to review your own answer.
